[02.09.2011] New DTH platform for Romania?

08.56 Europe/London, September 2, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

Although consolidation in Romania’s DTH sector is now under way, with Romtelecom having taken over AKTA Satelit and Boom TV earlier this year, the country may soon have a new platform.

Speaking to Mediafax, Serban Belenes, Eutelsat’s representative in Romania, confirmed the existence of a pilot project that is currently distributing 30 channels including the leading services TVR, Pro TV, National TV and Prima, along with up to – by default – 500 FTA channels.

While unwilling to provide any further details, Belenes confirmed that he had asked the State Office for Inventions and Trademarks (OSIM) at the end of July to register the name Freesat.

Uplink services for the pilot project are being provided by the Hungarian company eVision.

Should the platform launch, there is no guarantee it would offer the channels currently being distributed by the pilot service.

Romania’s DTH market is currently served by platforms operated by RCS&RDS (Digi), UPC (Focus Sat) and Romtelecom (Dolce, AKTA Satelit and Boom TV).
