[31.08.2011] Commercial start for DVB-T2 in Africa

14.01 Europe/London, August 30, 2011 By Julian Clover

The first commercial broadcasts using the DVB-T2 have begun in Africa following the launch of GOtv.

MultiChoice’s DTT offering went live in Lusaka, Zambia on June 29 and in Entebbe/Kampala, Uganda on August 29. GOtv is delivered by satellite to each country for ongoing terrestrial distribution.

“Our aim is to deliver digital television for everyone as we roll out DTT networks on the continent. GOtv is an affordable digital pay television offering with exciting local and international channels in great picture and sound quality,” said Ian Barnard, project manager, GOtv. “As an African business we are truly committed to achieving the best possible roll out of DTT and are working closely with governments and free to air broadcasters in each country. We aim to assist Governments in achieving a speedy migration from analogue to digital by 2015, by increasing the attractiveness and appetite for digital television offering.”

Around 20 channels are carried per frequency with the precise line-up being tailored to the individual country.
